A person's a person, no matter how small

A person is a person, no matter how small" -- Horton

That's the last line in the movie. Dr Seuss's Horton tells the story of an elephant who hears a cry of help coming from a speck of dust. Despite the community judging him and thought he's crazy, Horton was determined to help the lives on that speck.

One can imagine the various ways the quote can be used.

From the anti-abortionists..."a life is a life (even if it's a few days old), no matter how small"

From the social workers..." a person is a person, no matter how insignificant he's in society/how he has been judged by others, is worth helping"

And the list goes on.

On another note, the film reminded me of LOTR, when Galadriel spoke of the hobbits, "Even the smallest person can change the course of the future."

One see how the small(and probably the most ignored) people could make a difference. In LOTR, middle earth passed with the destruction of the ring(thanks to Frodo and Sam). In Horton, the WHOs tried their best to make their presence heard, and was heard, finally, by the open-minded Rudy, thus saving the entire community.

The scripture says that God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. In the movie, one see how the humble (Horton, Rudy) overcame the proud mother kangaroo, not with aggression, but with love and forgiveness.

How inspiring. =)

Btw, Homeless FC is showing at the Singapore International Film Festival on 6,8 and 11 Apr. Consider catching it, if you have the time.

Homeless FC

“give me your blog address leh,add your link in my blog!”

"Errr..but my last entry was Apr 07, you sure you want to add? Nothing to read one leh "

"then u write la"

"erm...but I'm lazy..."

"aiyoh stop being lazy la!!!!"

另一边厢,又有人劝说我一定要磨磨笔尖,要不语文生锈什么的(the truth is, is not just rust, is already decomposed. haha).

I enjoy reading more than writing.

Watched Homeless FC yesterday(thanks to YL ) by Singapore documentary filmmakers James Leong and Lynn Lee. The film, based in Hong Kong, followed Dawn Team(曙光球队) through one year and captured how the soccer players(made up of ex-offenders, recovering drug addicts and gamblers and homeless people etc) reassessed their own lives after taking part in the Homeless World Cup. More accounts can be found in the filmmakers' blog.
What struck me most, was not the parallels between these players and my cases, but the dedication of the social workers. The focus of the film was not on them, but one could imagine how much time and effort they spent in motivating these people who have fallen through the cracks of the society.
I cannot imagine myself roaming the streets in the middle of the night in search of a client who did not return my calls/ report to me for sometime, and I doubt I ever have the courage to go that far. Neither do I have the guts to be in a settlement talk(that was not in the film, but from a HK professer sharing his experience as a social worker last year at a departmental workshop).
I doubt I would ever study and practise social work in HK...
